 I just got 2 bunnies...HELP....
« Thread Started on Oct 13, 2004, 2:43am »

Well, after 2-3 months of wanting bunnies, i found my turtles a better home (pond) and gave them up so they can be happier, well, i got lonley, so i got 2 bunnies, they are about 2 months old, and i have a few questions, im currently keeping the 2 bunnies in my 40 gallon tank, ive filled the bottom of it w/ bedding, ive put water for them, in the corner, i have a litter box, i know they are supposed to get unlimited hay, so i threw some hay in the bedding and they loved eating it...but they kept on pooping, then i was doing some research, and it appears that many people put all their hay in their litter box, why would they do that?...if they poo/pee on the hay, then eat it, wont they get sick?....hmm..im confused! another question, how can i determine their sex, i cant name them cause i dont know if they are a boy or a girl....and last question for now, im looking at them right now, they are snuggling up to each other, and they appear to be kinda shaking...maybe their cold??...hmm....what should i put in there so that if they get cold, they can warm themselves up?...any help would be appreciated...thanks, Peyman

Hi Peyman,

How big is a 40 gallon tank? Would suggest you to get a cage or playpen for them. Tank has rather poor air vendilation. What kind of bedding are u using currently?
pooing can be due to they have yet to learn to use their potty or they are marking territory.

Dun worry, bunnies are smart animals ;) many people put hay into the litterbox to encourage their buns to learn to use it. Many bunnies also like to do everything there -- sleeping, eating, etc. If you are afraid of dirtying ur buns, what u can do is put a rubber mat on top of the litter in the box. I dont know about the shaking part. Maybe other more experience bunnies parents can advise you on that.
You can go to the vet to check the gender of your buns, at the same time ask the questions you may have in mind.
Have fun with your buns! Post their pic if you can :)

I agree with gabrielle it's far better if you invest in a play-pen (for dogs?) for your new bunnies. It's also easier for us owners to clean and it's very portable. What I usually do is also sit in the pen with my bunnies and give them long scratches so it's definitely spacious! [image]

We discussed ideas on bunny housing on this thread:

As for determining the gender of your bunnies or "sexing" as it's known, do try these websites:

http://www.cs.cf.ac.uk/Rabbits/rabsex.html

http://www.beaglesunlimited.net/rabbitraising_sexingrabbits.htm

It may be a good idea to have someone try this with you as it's not easy to hold a bunny especially when you're proding your bunnies at a very sensitive area. [image] If not, as mentioned before, do take a trip down to the vet.

Don't worry about placing hay in the litter-tray. It actually encourages good litter habits as bunnies tend to eat and poo at the same time. If you're truly concern about your bunnies ingesting their own poop/pee, try suspending a small tray above their litter-tray so any uneaten hay pulled from the tray can fall into the litter-tray - no flyaway hay!
